Kongsak Yodmani, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), is confident that Japan's disaster management system will not affect its role as host of the 2026 Asian Games.
On 10 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Dr. Kongsak Yodmani, Governor of SAT, addressed concerns after Nagoya, the host city for the 20th Asian Games, experienced its heaviest rainfall in 136 years leading to severe flooding. He expressed confidence that Japan's disaster management system will handle the situation effectively and that it will not impact the competition scheduled from 19 September to 4 October 2026. He also issued warnings to the Thai delegation to remain vigilant regarding doping, COVID-19, influenza, and accidents.
Nagoya, the host city for the 20th Asian Games taking place from 19 September to 4 October 2026, encountered severe rainfall on 8 September 2026 GMT+7, measuring 104.5 millimeters within one hour—the highest in 136 years. This caused flash floods, submerged roads, and water rushing into buildings. Many expressed concern about whether Nagoya could still host the games and how any similar situations during the event would be managed.
Regarding this, Dr. Kongsak Yodmani, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, stated that Japan frequently faces severe natural disasters, being located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and typhoon paths, including earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, and heavy rain. Nevertheless, he trusts Japan's ability to manage and respond to these challenges effectively and believes such events will not disrupt the competition.
"For Thailand, with athletes already beginning to travel to Japan, we have personnel from SAT and the National Olympic Committee of Thailand with international event experience traveling ahead and alongside the teams to assist Thai athletes and handle any issues that arise. SAT will operate a Thai House service, and the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo has confirmed it is prepared with staff to support and facilitate the Thai athletes. SAT is coordinating closely with the embassy to be ready for any emergency situations," he said.
The SAT governor added that as the 20th Asian Games approach, all athletes should be cautious about injuries and illnesses. When in crowded places, wearing masks is advised to prevent influenza or the resurgence of COVID-19. Athletes should also be careful during travel, which carries accident risks.
Concerning doping tests, Dr. Kongsak emphasized that athletes must consult doctors or experts at the SAT Sports Science Center before taking any food, medication, or topical treatments to ensure safety. SAT continuously updates information, and recently, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), during a meeting, urged all member nations to strictly enforce anti-doping measures at the Asian Games.
