"Coach Wang" highlights two reasons why the Thailand national team came from behind to defeat Kyrgyzstan, immediately setting a goal for the second match at the 2026 Asian Games football tournament.
On 16 Sep 2026, Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul, head coach of the Thailand men's national football team, gave an interview after the first group stage match of Group A at the 2026 Asian Games football competition.
In this match, the Thailand national team fell behind by two goals but ultimately came from behind to beat Kyrgyzstan 3-2, with goals from Jehanafi Mama and two goals from substitute Priporn Wongsa.
Coach Wang, Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul, revealed two reasons for Thailand's comeback: the players' dedication and the addition of more attacking players in the second half. The team responded well to the tactical adjustments.
“This was our first game, so we expected to get three points. The opponent was also strong; we had met them during FIFA Days and went down by two goals early. I must praise the players for giving more than 100% effort to come back. Thank you for all the congratulations.”
“We had high expectations for this game, but we fell behind by two goals. With the second-half tactics, we added more attacking players, and the players were able to fulfill that role.”
“Regarding Mon Priporn Wongsa, he has been with us for several camps. We have seen his skills and finishing ability. In the first half, we had many chances but failed to convert, so we brought in a player good at finishing.”
“For the next game against Hong Kong, before the tournament, we expected to get at least 4 points from these two matches. We earned 3 points in the first game, so we must not be complacent. If we get 3 points in the next match, we will definitely advance to the knockout stage. The game against Japan might allow us to rotate the team more easily.”
“This squad has been together for several camps. We have confidence in the players and staff, and the players have confidence in themselves and their teammates. This is the spirit and faith of this team.”
“From the start, no matter who comes in or out, everyone gives more than 100%. I want to thank them all for serving the nation. We are ready to serve the country and will do our best to repay the nation.”
“Thanks to all the fans who came to watch and support us. We received a warm welcome in Japan. Yesterday, during practice, schoolchildren came to take photos and enjoy the stadium atmosphere. We feel the Japanese people are very kind. Thank you very much for cheering us on.”
The next match for the Thailand men's national football team will be against Hong Kong at Toyota Stadium, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on 20 Sep 2026 at 14:00 Thai time. It will be broadcast live on Thairath TV Channel 32 and the AIS PLAY application.
