Sophia Gale Montgomery: Harvard graduate, NASA intern, who became a gold medal hero for Thailand's sailing team at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.


Tracing the journey of Sophia Gale Montgomery, a Thai-American sailor on Thailand’s national team, who recently won the ILCA 6 gold medal for Thailand’s sailing team at the 2026 Asian Games (Aichi–Nagoya 2026), securing a ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games in the United States.

Sophia Gale Montgomery, born 4 April 2003, is currently 23 years old. She is of Thai-American descent, holds a first-degree black belt (1st Dan) in taekwondo, and enjoys diving, certified as a Rescue Diver.

Sophia graduated with honors in physics from Harvard University and twice won the U.S. collegiate sailing championship. She is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Previously, she interned as a spacecraft systems engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA JPL).

Regarding her sailing career, Sophia began training at age 8 and joined Thailand’s youth national team at 13. She represented Thailand at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, competing in ILCA 6, finishing 27th out of 43. At the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, she placed 6th.

Most recently, at the 2026 Asian Games, she won the gold medal in the ILCA 6 sailing event in Aichi–Nagoya, Japan, marking Thailand’s 13th gold medal. She also secured qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA, for the second consecutive time.
