Spurs in Trouble! Romero Faces Additional Charges After Red Card in Liverpool Defeat

Cristian Romero was not spared as the FA filed additional charges over his conduct after receiving a red card in the defeat to Liverpool, suggesting he may face a suspension longer than one match.

On 25 December 2025, Cristian Romero, the captain and defender of Tottenham Hotspur, was hit with additional charges by the English Football Association (FA) for his behavior after being sent off in the Premier League match where the "Spurs" lost away to Liverpool on Saturday night.

The Argentine international defender received a second yellow card in injury time of the second half after a challenge on Ibrahima Konaté, resulting in his immediate dismissal. However, the latest FA charge is not related to this foul but concerns his conduct after the red card.

The FA stated that Romero behaved inappropriately by refusing to leave the field promptly and by confronting or acting aggressively towards referee John Brooks. Romero has until Friday, 2 January 2026, to submit his explanation regarding the charges.

Romero will serve at least a one-match suspension due to the red card and will definitely miss the match against Crystal Palace on 28 December.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur narrowly escaped a fine for on-field conduct after their players received a total of six yellow and red cards. Under FA rules, a club is fined if six or more players or staff members are punished, “excluding cases of second yellow cards.”

In that match, Spurs players who received yellow cards included Franck, Micky van de Ven, and Rodrigo Bentancur, while Xavi Simons was sent off in the first half for a late tackle on Virgil van Dijk.

However, since Romero’s red card was due to a second yellow, the total number of punished players and staff did not meet the threshold. As a result, the FA did not impose the initial £25,000 fine on the "Spurs," narrowly avoiding the penalty.
