Manchester United Prepares to Renew Pursuit of England International Defender as Maguire Replacement

Manchester United is preparing to re-approach Jarrod Branthwaite amid a severe defensive shortage, with him remaining INEOS's number one target.

On 25 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Manchester United plans to reconsider signing 23-year-old Everton defender Jarrod Branthwaite as their defensive situation grows concerning. INEOS, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, also seeks to strengthen their squad with a top center-back.

Branthwaite was once regarded as INEOS's "number one target" and was poised to be their marquee signing in summer 2024. However, Everton firmly rejected Manchester United's bids twice, with the highest offer reaching £45 million plus £5 million in bonuses.

After that deal fell through, Manchester United turned to sign Lenny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Ayen Heven to bolster their defense. Yet overall, these reinforcements were insufficient, especially following the departures of Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelöf, who had no direct replacements.

The situation worsened as Harry Maguire and de Ligt both suffered injuries, while Noussair Mazraoui was away representing Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations, leaving Manchester United severely short on defenders.

According to Caught Offside, Branthwaite remains Manchester United's top name on their list. A source revealed:

"His Premier League experience, physical strength, and improved ball-playing skills make Branthwaite well-suited to Rúben Amorim’s system."

Although the Everton defender has yet to play this season due to a hamstring injury, Manchester United's interest persists. Any transfer is expected next summer after close monitoring of his fitness and form.

Furthermore, if Harry Maguire's contract expires and he leaves Old Trafford next summer, Branthwaite is viewed as a suitable long-term option to become the defensive cornerstone for the 'Red Devils.'
