Two Manchester United players were included as Steven Gerrard named his best England team from those he played with internationally.
Steven Gerrard, former England midfielder and Liverpool player, selected his best five teammates he played with for England, including Ashley Cole, Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, Alan Shearer, and Wayne Rooney.
Gerrard said, “Starting with defense, I want to honor Rio Ferdinand and John Terry, but rather than choosing one over the other, I pick Ashley Cole because I believe Cole was the best left-back in the world when I played alongside him.”
“Moving to midfield, it has to be Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard. Up front, I’d choose Alan Shearer because I played with him in a few games and, statistically, he stood out above the rest. And I must pick Wayne Rooney as well.”
Gerrard added more about Paul Scholes: “Scholes is the best midfielder in the Premier League. To me, he controlled the game brilliantly, could change its direction, dribble past opponents, score important goals with the outside of his foot, and deliver decisive final passes.”
“For me, the key question is how you would play against him—could you match his physicality? He was always ready to take a yellow card. Honestly, I’m not sure anyone today could get past Scholes.”
