Don't get too excited! Weietz scores his first goal for Liverpool, Shearer jokes it's just Wolves, the Premier League's bottom team.
On 30 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Florian Weietz finally broke his scoring drought for Liverpool in their narrow 2-1 win over Wolverhampton at Anfield. However, former England striker Alan Shearer humorously remarked that fans shouldn't get overly excited since the opponent was the league's bottom team.
The goal came just one minute after Ryan Gravenberch put the Reds ahead 1-0. Weietz took advantage of a strong attacking move by Hugo Ekitike, then accelerated to flick the ball past José Sá, scoring a crucial goal that helped Liverpool secure a 2-1 victory over Wolves, who remain winless this season.
Weietz had to wait six months to score his first goal after moving from Bayer Leverkusen for a massive £116 million transfer fee.
On the podcast The Rest is Football, Gary Lineker raised the topic of Weietz's form, to which Micah Richards commented, “We said from the start he would be the signing of the season, so he needs to score more.”
Richards added, “They spent around £100 million. I’ve praised him a lot! His movement between the lines, his turns, technical ability—everything. And he scored his first goal, which I was very happy about. But I want to see more because we've set the stage for him!”
Shearer immediately responded in a joking manner: “Don’t get carried away, it was just Wolves visiting, after all.” He quickly added with a laugh, “I’m just joking, John!”
