Liverpool Breaks World Record, Ready to Spend Big on Champion-Caliber Player to Strengthen Squad

Liverpool breaks the world record and is ready to spend big to sign a champion-level player to strengthen their squad.

On 30 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Fichajes, a prominent Spanish media outlet, reported that Liverpool, a leading Premier League club, is preparing to offer for Alessandro Bastoni, the Italian national team defender and Euro 2020 champion from Inter Milan, to reinforce their defense.

Liverpool has clearly faced defensive problems this season, with Ibrahima Konaté's form declining and contract talks unresolved. Meanwhile, captain Virgil van Dijk is aging, Joe Gomez continues to struggle with chronic injuries, and newly signed Giovanni León has suffered a serious injury sidelining him long-term.

Liverpool's primary target was Marc Guehi, but he has confirmed he will stay with Crystal Palace until his contract ends before moving on a free transfer after this season. This has led the "Reds" to seek alternative defensive reinforcements in the January winter transfer window.

Recently, sources indicate that Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's owners, are seriously considering signing Alessandro Bastoni, preparing a 95 million euro (83 million pounds) offer to bring him from Inter Milan as a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

If Bastoni transfers for that fee, Liverpool will set a new world record for the most expensive defender, surpassing Manchester United's Harry Maguire (80 million pounds) and Manchester City's Joško Gvardiol (77 million pounds).

Although 83 million pounds is a huge sum, especially for a mid-season signing, reports say Liverpool values Bastoni's potential and his age of 26, which is the peak of his career, making it a worthwhile investment.
