Rúben Amorim is being lined up for a new role just days after being sacked as manager by 'The Red Devils,' Manchester United.
On 8 Jan 2026 GMT+7, the British Daily Mail reported that Benfica, the 38-time Portuguese league champions, is considering appointing Rúben Amorim, former head coach of 'The Red Devils' Manchester United, as their new manager after José Mourinho's underwhelming performance this season.
Amorim, 40, was dismissed by Manchester United after winning only 24 of the 63 games he managed, marking the lowest win percentage for a permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson. Amorim's last game was a draw against Leeds United on the preceding Sunday.
However, given Amorim's reputation as a respected and successful coach in Portugal, he has become a target for Benfica.
Benfica is growing concerned about current manager José Mourinho's results, with the team sitting third in the Portuguese league, 10 points behind leaders FC Porto. In the UEFA Champions League, they rank 25th in the group stage standings, having won only 2 of 6 matches.
Benfica views Amorim as a suitable candidate to succeed José Mourinho, though it remains to be seen whether Amorim will immediately return to management or take a break after his challenging period at Manchester United.
During his playing career, Amorim spent nearly a decade at Benfica, winning the league title three times with the club.
