Man Utd Decides After Fletchers Interim Debut Ends in Draw with Burnley

Manchester United has made its decision after Darren Fletcher's first match as interim manager ended in just a draw against Burnley.

On 8 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Darren Fletcher, interim manager of Manchester United, revealed the latest situation after his debut match in the English Premier League, which ended in a 2-2 draw away at bottom-table Burnley.

In this match, Man Utd fell behind in the 13th minute due to an own goal by Aiden Heaven. However, Benjamin Sesko scored twice in the 50th and 60th minutes to put Man Utd ahead 2-1, before Burnley equalized 2-2 through Jaydon Anthony in the 66th minute.

This result meant Man Utd drew for the third consecutive match, bringing their total to 32 points and dropping them to 7th place. Newcastle United won a thrilling 4-3 against Leeds United and also have 32 points but sit 6th due to a better goal difference (Newcastle +5 / Man Utd +4).

Most recently, Darren Fletcher, who managed Man Utd for the first time following Ruben Amorim's dismissal, confirmed that the "Red Devils" have appointed him to continue as interim manager for the FA Cup third round home match against Brighton on Sunday, 11 Jan.

Meanwhile, Man Utd is taking time before deciding on an interim manager to lead the team through the rest of the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Michael Carrick, two former fan-favorite players, are the leading candidates for the role.

Darren Fletcher confirmed about continuing to manage Man Utd in the FA Cup third round against Brighton: "I have been informed by Omar Berrada (CEO) and Jason Wilcox (Football Director) that they want me to lead the team on Sunday."

"I felt this might be the case since Monday, but I wanted to focus on the game against Burnley first. So I will be the one leading the team on Sunday, and I will devote all my focus and energy to that game."
