Liverpool Smartly Targets Champion-Caliber Player in Swap Deal for Unlucky Star

All parties agree as Liverpool cleverly aims to acquire a champion-quality player in exchange for an unlucky footballer.

On 12 January 2026, Sky Sports Italy reported that Napoli, the Italian Serie A giant, is interested in signing Italian international forward Federico Chiesa from Liverpool, the prominent English Premier League club, bringing him back to play in his homeland.

Federico Chiesa has been closely watched as a likely January transfer candidate after receiving very limited opportunities from Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp, despite impressing the Reds' fans almost every time he played, mostly as a substitute.

As a result, Napoli is ready to bring Federico Chiesa onboard, along with Juventus, his former club, which also wants to re-sign him this January. He has appeared in only 34 matches for Liverpool since his move last season.

Recently, sources stated that if Napoli submits an official offer for Federico Chiesa, Liverpool plans to propose a swap deal involving 26-year-old Italian international defender Alessandro Buongiorno plus additional cash.

Liverpool seeks a long-term defensive replacement for 34-year-old Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, whose contract expires this season and has yet to be renewed. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi might be signed by rivals Manchester City instead during the winter transfer window.

Alessandro Buongiorno is a key defender for Napoli’s current squad, helping the team win last season’s Serie A title and this season’s Italian Super Cup. He has recently earned 12 caps for Italy’s senior national team.
