One of the top teams in the English Premier League is reportedly considering a short-term loan deal for Argentine star Lionel Messi to strengthen their squad.
On 15 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Spanish media outlet Fichajes reported that Liverpool, known as the "Reds," are considering loaning Lionel Messi, the Argentine superstar currently playing for Inter Miami, on a short-term basis to boost creativity in their attack and help Messi maintain fitness ahead of the 2026 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, which begins at the end of February.
At 38 years old, Messi is regarded as one of the most successful footballers ever, having won the Ballon d'Or eight times, the UEFA Champions League four times, and La Liga ten times during his illustrious career with Barcelona, where he also became the club's all-time top scorer with 672 goals.
He then moved to Paris Saint-Germain for two years, winning two league titles, before transferring to the United States to play for Inter Miami, co-owned by David Beckham. Messi helped the team secure their 13th league title in 2025, along with the MLS Cup, and currently has a contract with Inter Miami until 2028.
However, Messi wants to move on loan to a European club in January to train and compete at a higher level before the new MLS season starts on 21 February 2026. This move is also part of his preparation for the 2026 World Cup, which may be his last with Argentina, after having won two Copa América titles and the 2022 World Cup.
According to reports from Spanish media, Liverpool is considering acquiring Messi on a short-term loan to help improve the team’s situation. Currently, Liverpool sits fourth in the Premier League table, trailing leaders Arsenal by 14 points. They believe Messi’s experience and creativity could significantly aid the team, even if only for a brief period.
