Insider Reveals Onana Still Hopes to Regain No.1 Spot at Man United, Confirms Comeback Likely with This Coach

Insiders reveal that Andre Onana still hopes to reclaim the No.1 goalkeeper spot at Manchester United and clearly state that if this particular coach manages the team, a comeback is very likely.

On 16 Jan 2026 GMT+7, a source close to Andre Onana disclosed that the Cameroonian international goalkeeper has not given up and hopes to revive his career at Manchester United under a new manager in the 2026/27 season, despite currently being loaned out from Old Trafford.

Onana had a difficult spell with the Red Devils; in the 2025/26 season, Ruben Amorim reduced his role as first-choice goalkeeper, and Altay Bayindir was given the chance to start in early Premier League games, while Onana only appeared once in the Carabao Cup away match against Grimsby Town.

However, his performance in that match was disappointing, conceding two goals in normal time and losing 12-penalty shootout rounds, leading Amorim to decide to loan him to Trabzonspor late in the summer transfer window, without an option to buy.

Although temporarily playing abroad, Onana remains contracted to Manchester United until 2028, potentially extending to 2029 if an extension option is exercised, so he still believes his future at Old Trafford is not closed.

According to iPaper, sources close to Onana believe that if the club appoints a coach who emphasizes building play from the back and values goalkeepers skilled with their feet—similar to the approach of Xavi Hernandez—he might get a chance to return.

Nonetheless, the reality may be more challenging as Manchester United currently have Sergen Lamens, who has adapted excellently to the Premier League and firmly holds the No.1 spot, making Onana’s prospects of reclaiming the primary goalkeeper role increasingly slim.
