Not a Fluke! Szoboszlai Reveals Behind-the-Scenes of Free Kick Under the Wall in Liverpools Away Win Over Marseille

Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool midfielder, revealed the moment he chose to shoot a free kick under Marseille's wall, resulting in a 1-0 lead for the Reds.

On 22 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool midfielder, disclosed that his clever free kick—shooting the ball low under the wall against Olympique Marseille—was not luck or a last-minute decision, but the result of preparation and reading the game beforehand.

The Hungarian international said he had been informed before the match that Marseille usually do not position players lying behind the wall to block low shots, which gave him the chance to try shooting under the wall if he saw the right moment.

"I did my homework and knew that if no one was lying behind the wall, I might have the chance to shoot under it," Szoboszlai said.

"When I saw no one lying there, I decided to try, and it worked."

He admitted everything happened in a split second, but his observation of the opponent's player positions and confidence in his technique led him to choose a different shooting path, resulting in a goal that unlocked Liverpool's lead before halftime. They went on to win 3-0, climbing to 4th place in the league phase standings, with a bright chance for automatic qualification, with only the final home game against Qarabag remaining.
