Manchester United fans are excited as the club discusses re-signing a former player, revealing one key factor that could help make the dream come true.
On 22 January 2026, Football Insider, a prominent English media outlet, reported that Manchester United plans to bring back Mason Greenwood, a former academy product, from Olympique Marseille to play again in the English Premier League.
Mason Greenwood, 24, was forced to leave Manchester United after facing severe public backlash over allegations of assaulting his girlfriend, despite later reconciling and having a child together. He moved on loan to Getafe in Spain's La Liga in 2023.
Manchester United then sold Greenwood to Olympique Marseille for £26 million. He has since excelled, scoring 42 goals and providing 12 assists in 63 appearances, sharing the Ligue 1 top scorer award last season with Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé, each netting 21 goals.
Recently, Football Insider revealed that "sources told Football Insider that Manchester United executives have internally discussed bringing Mason Greenwood back to the club."
"Manchester United included a buy-back clause when they sold the 24-year-old winger to Marseille in summer 2024, allowing them to re-sign the forward at a price below his current market value."
Manchester United sold Mason Greenwood to Marseille below market value but secured several advantageous conditions, including a 50% sell-on clause on any future transfer and a buy-back option for the future.
