Has Arne Slot gone off track? He claimed that PSG helped Liverpool win their 20th Premier League title.
A significant number of Liverpool fans have expressed displeasure with current manager Arne Slot after he stated that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) played an important role in helping the Reds secure last season's Premier League title. This came ahead of Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League home match against Qarabağ on Wednesday at 03:00 GMT+7, broadcast on beIN SPORTS 2.
Ahead of the game, Liverpool sit fourth in the table with 15 points, having already secured a playoff spot as a seeded team. They still have a chance to finish in the top eight to qualify automatically for the round of 16.
Slot’s comment that sparked controversy was his view that an early exit from European competition gave the team more time to rest and prepare for league matches, allowing Liverpool to focus fully on domestic competition and ultimately clinch their 20th top-flight title, matching the English football record.
Last season, Liverpool, the league phase champions, faced PSG in the Champions League round of 16. Both legs ended with a 1-1 aggregate score before Liverpool lost 1-4 on penalties in front of fans at Anfield, a painful defeat for supporters.
However, Slot expressed a different perspective, saying before the Qarabağ match, “This might not be a popular opinion, but perhaps the reason we won the league last season was because we faced Paris Saint-Germain. After being knocked out of the Champions League, we had a full week to prepare for the league games.”
Nevertheless, this statement further enraged fans for several reasons, including:
@tdavid22_ posted on X, “After the PSG game, we performed poorly in the league. We won the title because of the first half of the season.”
@NeilLfc_5 added, “He openly admits he can’t manage multiple competitions at once, yet people still defend him. It’s clearly embarrassing.”
@YNWA1980 expressed disappointment and called for Slot’s dismissal: “Weren’t we 14 points clear at that time? PSG, second tier, two league titles in 30 years. Slot keeps repeating himself, winning only 5 matches since September. It’s time for him to go!”
@Fade_Cob2 said, “We were double digits ahead then Get Alonso in already.”
@Samb37153 commented, “We won the league because PSG beat us, hahaha. He’s lost it.”
Massive summer spending of £446 million raised expectations, but new signings like Alexander Isak (£125 million), Florian Wirtz (£116 million), and Hugo Ekitike (£79 million) have shown inconsistent form.
Moreover, Mohamed Salah’s situation continues to distract the team. Although he signed a new contract in April 2025 extending his stay until 2027, transfer rumors persist due to interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, alongside Salah’s statement that he has “no relationship whatsoever” with Slot.
