Liverpool Eyeing Top Defender: Two Signs Favoring the Reds

Liverpool has found a committed player and stands a chance to sign a top defender, revealing two signals favoring the Reds.

On 29 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Florian Plettenberg, a renowned journalist from Sky Sports, reported that Liverpool, a leading Premier League club, is likely to work with Dayot Upamecano, the French international defender from Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich.

Dayot Upamecano’s contract with Bayern Munich expires at the end of this season, allowing him to negotiate in advance with foreign clubs for a free transfer in the summer. Bayern has offered him a new contract, but he has yet to agree.

Recently, Florian Plettenberg stated that Dayot Upamecano is interested in moving to Liverpool, awaiting an offer from the Reds as well as from Real Madrid, the top club in Spain’s La Liga, both considered his dream options.

Florian Plettenberg revealed the latest on the 27-year-old defender: "Everyone is waiting for his decision and contract signing. His contract is ready, but Bayern Munich will not increase their offer."

"Upamecano can sign until 2030 or 2031, with a release clause in summer 2027. He could earn €20 million per year plus a large commission along with his agent."

"However, Bayern have waited for weeks and want a quick decision. In my view, he is waiting on Liverpool or Real Madrid. Liverpool is interested in Upamecano, we can confirm that."

Liverpool aims to strengthen their defense to replace Virgil van Dijk, who is declining, and Ibrahima Konaté, who has yet to renew. They also missed out on Mark Gehe, who was signed by Manchester City before his contract expired in June.
