Newcastle Faces Double Setback After Carabao Cup Exit, Losing to Manchester City

Newcastle suffers a double setback after failing to defend the Carabao Cup title, losing to Manchester City.

On 5 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Eddie Howe, Newcastle United's manager, revealed the latest bad news after the second leg of the 2025-26 Carabao Cup semi-final, where Newcastle lost 1-3 away to Manchester City, with a 2-leg aggregate score of 1-5.

This ended the defending champion Newcastle's Carabao Cup campaign, while Manchester City advanced to the final to face Arsenal at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, 22 Mar 2026 GMT+7.

Newcastle received further bad news as key forward Anthony Gordon suffered a hamstring muscle injury late in the first half, forcing a substitution for Harvey Barnes in the 44th minute. Eddie Howe admitted the injury was concerning.

The Newcastle manager said about Anthony Gordon's injury, "It appears to be a hamstring muscle issue. I’m not certain how severe it is, but it was enough to take him off the pitch, which is very worrying."

Currently, Newcastle has seven injured players as follows:

Anthony Gordon (hamstring)

Bruno Guimarães (ankle)

Joelinton (groin)

Lewis Miley (knee)

Tino Livramento (hamstring)

Fabian Schär (ankle)

Emil Krafth (knee)
