Starting Anew with the Same Player? Man United Eyes Return of Star in Top Form

On 14 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Manchester United emerged as the favorite to re-sign Scott McTominay, amid reports that the Scottish international dreams of returning to the Premier League despite his outstanding performance with Napoli, the Serie A champions.

The 29-year-old midfielder moved from Manchester United to Napoli in 2024 for around £32 million and has delivered historic performances since his first season, helping the team win the league and earning the Most Valuable Player award.

He also broke the goal-scoring record for Scottish players in Italy's league, previously held by Denis Law, was nominated for the Ballon d'Or, and won Italy's Player of the Year award.

Although he is contracted with Napoli until 2028 and continues to score this season, Italian media report that he is open to transferring in 2026, seeking a return to football in England.

Napoli's management admits that if a suitable offer arrives, it may be difficult to retain the player, citing the example of Stuttgart releasing a player to Newcastle United after receiving a huge bid.

Meanwhile, Manchester United is searching for a new midfielder as Casemiro prepares to leave, and uncertainty surrounds Bruno Fernandes' future, making McTominay a key target if Napoli considers selling him in the future.
