Manchester United reveals losses exceeding one billion baht after sacking Ruben Amorim, paying a high price but winning zero trophies.
On 27 Feb 2026, Manchester United, a prominent Premier League club, disclosed the financial losses incurred from dismissing Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, following their decision to part ways on 5 Jan.
Manchester United abruptly fired Ruben Amorim after he openly criticized club management following a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on 4 Jan. It was recently revealed that the "Red Devils" had to pay nearly £16 million (680 million baht) in compensation for the remaining 18 months of his contract.
This figure was disclosed in documents filed with the New York Stock Exchange last Thursday, after the club reported a £32.6 million (1.3855 billion baht) profit in the second quarter ending 31 Dec 2025.
Manchester United allocated a budget of £15.9 million (675.75 million baht) as the maximum compensation payable to Ruben Amorim and his staff, marking the end of a costly and ultimately unsuccessful experiment with the three-defender formation under his management.
Previously, in similar documents dated 27 Nov 2024, Manchester United confirmed paying Sporting Lisbon £11 million to acquire Ruben Amorim as a replacement for Erik ten Hag, who required a £10.4 million compensation fee. This means the total expenses related to Amorim’s appointment and departure amounted to £37.3 million (1.58525 billion baht).
Ruben Amorim’s performance during his 14 months in charge of Manchester United was as follows:
- 24 wins, 18 draws, and 21 losses in 63 matches.
- Finished 15th in the Premier League 2024-25 season, the club’s worst placement since relegation from the top tier in 1973-74.
- Lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
- Eliminated from the Carabao Cup second round after a penalty shootout loss to Grimsby Town from League Two.
- Ranked 6th in the Premier League table before being sacked.
