USA Could Face Iran in 2026 FIFA World Cup

The Iran national football team could face the United States if they decide to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

On 2 March 2025, following a major joint operation by the United States and Israel against Iran that escalated tensions, there are reports that Iran might withdraw from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States is co-hosting with Mexico and Canada from 11 June to 19 July. However, Iranian sports officials have not yet made a clear statement.

In the 2026 World Cup, Iran is placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand.

Meanwhile, the United States is in Group D with Paraguay, Australia, and the winner of the UEFA playoff Group C (Turkey, Slovakia, Kosovo, or Romania).

However, if Iran decides to participate in the 2026 World Cup, there is a possibility they could face the United States in the Round of 32, provided both nations finish as runners-up in their respective groups during the group stage.

If Iran does withdraw, Iraq or the United Arab Emirates might take their place in the 2026 World Cup. Iraq has already reached the intercontinental playoff finals, while the UAE lost to Iraq in the final Asian qualifying round. The final decision is still pending from all parties involved.
