Thrilling experience! Fabian Schär recounts a harrowing moment hiding in a bunker on his Instagram story after being caught in Middle East conflict while undergoing a recovery program.
A nightmare he won't forget: Fabian Schär, the key defender for Newcastle United, shared his experience of being trapped amid severe conflict in the Middle East.
Last week, the 34-year-old defender was granted permission by his club to travel to the Middle East for physical therapy to treat a chronic ankle injury dating back to early this year. However, his trip coincided with a period of heightened tensions between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, marked by reports of missile and drone attacks at multiple locations in the Arabian Gulf region.
Fabian Schär posted on his personal social media, revealing images that alarmed fans—showing the interior of the underground shelter or bunker where he sought refuge. He stated,
"I have just been through the scariest few days of my life because I witnessed that violence firsthand... I am very relieved to have found a way back home safely, but what happened there was truly frightening."
"But what we experienced there, and what is still happening now, is really terrifying. I hope aid reaches everyone who needs it in the affected areas."
Reports indicate that more than 3,400 flights were abruptly canceled, while major airports like Dubai and Doha temporarily closed for safety reasons, making Schär's return trip to England extremely difficult.
Schär's absence has directly impacted Newcastle's defense as they compete for European qualification spots. He is expected to require at least three more months of recovery. Beyond his physical condition, the club plans to have medical staff closely monitor his mental health following this traumatic experience.
