Liverpool fans were furious, criticizing one Reds player after their away defeat to Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg match.
In the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 last night, the Reds, Liverpool, traveled to face Galatasaray but ultimately lost 0-1 in Turkey under manager Jürgen Klopp.
At Rams Park stadium in Istanbul, the home team seemed shaky early on but took the lead after just seven minutes from a corner kick, with Mario Lemina heading in close range to score the winning goal for Galatasaray in this match.
It was a particularly tough day for Florian Wirtz, who had several early chances but failed to convert them. His poor finishing was evident as he had three shots off target and missed a key opportunity. He was substituted in the 72nd minute after losing possession 14 times. His SofaScore rating was 6.3, the lowest among all players on the pitch.
After starting on the left wing, Klopp may consider moving the German player to a more central position in the second leg. It remains to be seen if Wirtz will be trusted to start that match following his poor performance in Turkey.
However, some Liverpool fans remain frustrated, expressing criticism of Wirtz's recent form on social media, such as: "Deep down, every Liverpool fan feels Wirtz has been the most wasteful investment we've ever made. There's no other way to describe it. He showed no commitment in the game."
Another fan added: "Wirtz isn’t good enough for Liverpool. The entire midfield needs a complete overhaul. Oh, and I almost forgot, one of them is being paid £280,000 per week until 2031."
Another commented: "In a big game like this, he was awful. He was subbed off due to ineffectiveness. But honestly, I think every Liverpool player played poorly except the goalkeeper. Wirtz looked like he hadn’t touched a ball in years. This was his worst game in the red shirt, truly embarrassing."
