Mong Mong Lwin, Former Myanmar Captain, Assaults Female Fan in Stands Witnesses Report Insults to His Family

Mong Mong Lwin, captain of Myanmar's national team, stormed into the stands and assaulted a female fan. The league has not yet determined any punishment.

On 13 Mar 2026, a scandal erupted in Myanmar football after Mong Mong Lwin, the national team captain, physically attacked a female fan during a Myanmar league match on 10 Mar 2026 at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon.

The incident took place during halftime of the match between Yangon FC and Yadanabon. As Mong Mong Lwin was leaving the field after the first half, he heard a female fan in the stands continuously shouting insults at the Yangon team.

Eyewitnesses at the stadium reported that Mong Mong Lwin lost control of his temper, climbed into the stands, and struck the female fan in the face area. Although not a full direct hit, he lunged and clearly raised his hand to strike her face.

"He went into the stands to assault that female fan. Although he didn’t fully connect, he swung at her face. This fan regularly attends Myanmar matches and commonly shouts insults at players she dislikes," an eyewitness said.

The incident was recorded during the live broadcast of the match, capturing the female fan’s voice shouting:

"What are you doing? You’re a professional footballer and still don’t know how to control yourself? Hitting me on the cheek—aren’t you ashamed? And you even took a photo!"

These sounds and images quickly became crucial evidence widely circulated on Myanmar social media.

Though such behavior clearly violates football competition rules—normally resulting in a red card and immediate ejection—no action was taken against Mong Mong Lwin. He continued playing for Yangon FC until the match ended.

When Myanmar media inquired about disciplinary measures, officials responded:

"The decision to punish depends on the referee’s and officials’ reports from that day. We cannot provide a clear answer at this time."

This incident sparked widespread criticism among fans and the Myanmar public, with most agreeing that professional players should never assault spectators under any circumstances, especially women, which is absolutely unacceptable.

However, information from the other side claims the allegation that the player punched the fan is incorrect. They say he only pushed her. Witnesses at the scene confirm this. It is also noted that the female fan provoked Mong Mong Lwin first, using racist slurs and insulting comments about his mother, and had a habit of asking players for money.
