Barcelona celebrates loudly as the club receives latest good news ahead of their UCL qualification bid and pursuit of their first championship in 11 years.
On 17 March 2026 GMT+7, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that 61-year-old German coach Hansi Flick is preparing to sign a new contract with Spanish La Liga giant Barcelona extending through June 2028.
The agreement between Barcelona's sporting director Deco and the German coach was finalized during a meeting in Barcelona in February involving club president Joan Laporta, Hansi Flick, and Flick's personal agent Pini Zahavi.
Hansi Flick stated, “The president is the reason I am here,” reflecting that this contract extension is linked to the recent presidential election in which Joan Laporta won with 68.18% of the vote.
Flick prefers to renew his contract year by year rather than commit long-term, showing his determination while maintaining flexibility. His main goal is to lead Barcelona to win the UEFA Champions League, which they last won in the 2014-15 season under Luis Enrique.
In the 2024-25 season, Flick led Barcelona to four victories over Real Madrid—twice in La Liga, in the Spanish Super Cup final, and in the Copa del Rey—marking the first time in the modern era that Barcelona defeated their rivals in all official matches within a single season.
In his first season with Barcelona, he won three domestic trophies: the Spanish Super Cup, Copa del Rey, and La Liga. In the 2025-26 season, he added another Spanish Super Cup, bringing his total career trophies as a coach to 12 so far.
Flick's new contract sets his salary at 7.5 million euros per year, with additional bonuses of 1 million euros if they win the UCL and 750,000 euros for winning La Liga, up from his previous 3 million euros per year contract signed in 2024.
Some reports indicate that Flick's actual earnings from Barcelona could reach 9–11 million euros annually when including image rights and various bonuses.
Barcelona is scheduled to host Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg on Wednesday, 18 March 2026 GMT+7 at 00:45, after drawing 1-1 in the first leg away match.
