Arne Slot disagrees! Carragher criticizes Liverpool for lacking teamwork and fighting spirit.
On 18 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Jamie Carragher, a well-known football pundit, sharply criticized his former club after Liverpool, under manager Arne Slot, was held to a 1-1 draw by the struggling Tottenham Hotspur, missing the chance to move into the Premier League's top four.
"I think this was a very poor performance from Liverpool. I'm not trying to disrespect Spurs, but looking at the last 2-3 months, they have probably been the worst team in the Premier League in terms of results."
"Is it the manager's fault, or the squad's structure? If a new manager comes in, can they revive the team? I'm not sure. But I think many issues trace back to last summer — some players only want to play when the ball is at their feet but don't want to fight for the team. That's why other teams find it so easy to play against this Liverpool side."
Recently, Arne Slot disagreed with the claim that Liverpool do not play as a team and lack fighting spirit, stating, "I agree with many things Jamie said this season, but not this."
"After many disappointments, it wouldn't be surprising if players gave up, but I can say they have not done that."
"After conceding the equalizer, the opponents had a counterattack chance, and 7 or 8 of our players were in the penalty area. We blocked the shot, conceded a corner, and then counterattacked, creating a chance for Ekitiqué."
"A team that has given up or where players do not work together wouldn't show that fighting spirit after facing their 120th disappointment of the season."
However, Slot admitted that the team still lacks perfect coordination both with and without the ball, but stressed that this is not an attitude issue.
"It's because our connections aren't as strong as before, and there are things to fix, but I still see a team fighting together."
This Wednesday night will be a crucial test as Liverpool must beat Galatasaray by at least two goals to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.
