England Star Admits 2026 World Cup Could Be His Last

One of England's well-known players has admitted that the 2026 World Cup might be the last World Cup he plays in, if he is named to the team.

Harry Maguire, defender for the "Red Devils" Manchester United, expressed confidence that he is one of the best defenders in the world. He hopes to be selected for England's 2026 World Cup squad, which he believes will likely be his final World Cup appearance.

Since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager, the Red Devils have won 7 of 10 Premier League matches, moving up to third place, with Maguire playing a significant role.

The 33-year-old, who recently extended his contract with Manchester United until June 2027, considers himself one of the top defenders worldwide.

"I still believe that, even at this age, I remain one of the best defenders in the world within both penalty areas. I think there is no real doubt about that," Maguire said.

Maguire has previously played in two World Cups, in 2018 and 2022, helping England reach the semifinals and quarterfinals respectively. He admitted he is very eager to represent his country in the 2026 World Cup, which he expects to be his last.

"I think this will be my last World Cup. I've been twice before but missed the Euros two years ago due to injury, which was very painful."

"So, I am eager to go this time, no matter what role the manager wants me to play—whether starting or coming on late—because I still believe I can help the team. If the manager believes the same, I am confident he will pick me."

Maguire also spoke about overcoming criticism, saying, "I've always thought that no matter if you're a superstar or a world-class player, you will have ups and downs and challenges to face. That's why you see many players have two or three years at their peak, then drop off, move abroad, and you never hear about them again."

"Wayne Rooney was here; he was one of the best players to ever play for this club and faced a lot of criticism during his poor form periods. I often look to players like Wayne and David Beckham and how they overcame those challenges."

"I just keep my head down and do my work, and I have great confidence in myself."
