"Slot" explains three reasons why Liverpool lost to PSG and were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, also sharing one piece of bad news (video).
On 15 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Arne Slot, Liverpool's manager, spoke after the UEFA Champions League 2025-26 quarterfinal second leg, where Liverpool lost 0-2 at home to Paris Saint-Germain and were eliminated with a 0-4 aggregate score.
This defeat ended Liverpool's chances of winning any trophies this season, leaving them to fight only for a top-five finish in the Premier League to qualify for next season's UCL. Currently fifth with 52 points, they face competition from Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Chelsea.
Arne Slot discussed three reasons why Liverpool lost to PSG in this match: "Today was similar to last season, where we got fewer results than we deserved. We should have won, but it was because of their quality in keeping a clean sheet."
The Liverpool manager addressed the disallowed penalty in the 64th minute, when the score was still 0-0. Initially, the referee awarded a penalty after Alexis Mac Allister was pushed down by Willian Pacho in the box, but after VAR review, the decision was overturned, judging the fall to be too easy.
Slot responded, "If you look at our season, I'm not surprised because there have been many decisions against us. For me, it's simple: if the referee doesn’t award a penalty, VAR won’t intervene."
"As I said, I think this isn’t surprising this season—not just in the Champions League, but also in the Premier League, there have been several unfavorable decisions against us."
"Also, we failed to score despite having many chances."
Arne Slot also revealed bad news about Hugo Ekitike’s injury, who twisted his ankle in the 30th minute: "It's not looking good. We all saw it was serious. We have to wait and see how it develops."
"He went home at halftime, and I haven’t seen him since. Losing players has been a recurring issue this season, but this injury is particularly tough for him because no one wants to get hurt, especially at this point in the season."
If Hugo Ekitike's injury is serious, it could affect his chances of joining the French national team for the 2026 World Cup finals, which start on 11 June.
