Carrick gives a clear, heartfelt response regarding Manchester United possibly appointing another permanent manager.
On 9 May 2026 GMT+7, Michael Carrick, interim manager of Manchester United, gave an interview ahead of tonight's Premier League match against Sunderland, scheduled for 21:00.
Manchester United has secured a top-5 finish in the Premier League standings and guaranteed a spot in next season's UEFA Champions League after beating Liverpool 3-2 in last week's intense derby match, credit largely going to Michael Carrick for his excellent performance.
Since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager in January, Manchester United has outperformed every other Premier League team, winning 10, drawing 2, and losing 2 out of 14 matches, collecting 32 points. This has led to calls for him to be given the permanent managerial role after the season ends.
However, Manchester United has not confirmed that Carrick will become permanent manager and is reportedly considering other top coaches for the position this summer, such as Julian Nagelsmann (Germany), Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth), and Mauricio Pochettino (USA).
Michael Carrick was asked whether the possibility of someone else becoming permanent manager makes him uncomfortable. He replied, "Not at all. Whether there are discussions or not, it doesn't bother me in the slightest."
"It hasn’t changed how I work. I am confident in the job we are doing, working with the players, and leading the team. So it really doesn't affect me at all."
"I think it’s quite clear from the start that this will be a process, in terms of finding the right person to eventually take on the role."
"I believe that as a coach or manager, you lead a group only if people want to follow you. It's not something you talk about much; it’s proven through actions."
"So when I feel the support and see that they all connect—not just with me but showing it together on the pitch—that is the most important thing."
"They have demonstrated that clearly in many ways, which is the most gratifying part. It’s satisfying to see them come together as a team."
