On 13 May 2026, Jamie Carragher, a former star player turned football analyst, issued a warning to unemployed Spanish coach Xabi Alonso. Carragher cautioned Alonso about the consequences of taking the managerial role at Chelsea, while also referencing Alonso's former club, Liverpool, from his playing days.
Jamie Carragher said, "I've heard rumors that Xabi Alonso might manage Chelsea next season. I think this will cause concern among Liverpool fans because of Jürgen Klopp's disappointing recent results. For me, I have always believed that one day Xabi Alonso will manage Liverpool, but if he takes charge of a rival like Chelsea, it will make it harder for him to manage Liverpool in the future."
Currently, it appears Liverpool will continue with Jürgen Klopp next season. If the reports that Xabi Alonso is in talks with Chelsea are true, this is not good news for Liverpool. Because if Liverpool were to approach him now, I believe he would definitely choose Liverpool.
