Romano Confirms: Real Madrid Has New Head Coach, Reveals Introduction Date for Arbelóas Successor

Romano confirms: "Real Madrid" has appointed a new head coach and reveals the date for the introduction of Arbelóa's successor.

On 18 May 2026, Fabrizio Romano, a journalist specializing in player transfers and the transfer market, reported that Real Madrid, the La Liga giant, has a new head coach to replace interim manager Álvaro Arbelóa, who is set to leave after this season.

Romano stated, "Here We Go! José Mourinho has agreed to all terms for his return to Real Madrid. All conditions have been verbally agreed upon between José Mourinho and Real Madrid, with only the official signing expected this month."

"The initial plan is a 2-year contract with Mourinho, with no issues in any details because his sole desire is to return to Real Madrid."

"Mourinho is preparing to travel to Madrid after the Real Madrid vs. Athletic Bilbao match (the La Liga season finale on Saturday, 23 May). He has already begun planning for his new role at the Bernabéu."

José Mourinho, aged 63, recently left Benfica after leading the Portuguese league season undefeated in 34 matches, but finishing only 3rd behind champions Porto and runners-up Sporting Lisbon, before deciding to return to Real Madrid after 13 years.

Mourinho's first spell managing Real Madrid was from 2010 to 2013, covering 178 matches with 128 wins, 28 draws, and 22 losses, winning three trophies: one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey, and one Spanish Super Cup.
