Quick move: Manchester United is close to securing their first signing to bolster Michael Carrick's squad, revealing transfer fee and contract details.
On 22 May 2026 GMT+7, Ben Jacobs, a renowned football transfer journalist, reported that Manchester United, a top Premier League club, is approaching its first signing in the summer transfer window. This follows the official appointment of Michael Carrick as the permanent manager on a two-year contract.
Ben Jacobs noted, "Negotiations between Manchester United and Atalanta to acquire Ederson are progressing. Although no formal offer was made by Friday morning, the situation could change rapidly. Ederson and Manchester United have already discussed a five-year contract."
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail also reported similarly that Manchester United will resume talks with Atalanta to sign Ederson, a Brazilian international midfielder, after talks with Atletico Madrid, another interested club, failed.
Sources indicate that Manchester United would pay approximately £39 million for Ederson: an initial £34.5 million plus an additional £4.5 million in bonuses. His weekly wages are expected to be around £150,000.
At 26 years old, Ederson is reportedly interested in joining Manchester United, having been a long-standing target. Signing him may be easier than other expensive midfield targets such as Elliott Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba, Adam Worthington, or Aurélien Tchouaméni.
Manchester United aims to strengthen the central midfield with two new players after Casemiro's contract expires and he plans to leave this summer, likely moving to Inter Miami. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte is expected to be sold following unsatisfactory performances.
