Manchester United Faces Setback as Premier League Rival Decides on New Season Transfer Plans

Manchester United faces disappointment as a Premier League rival has made its decision on new season transfer plans.

On 27 May 2026, the British media outlet Daily Mail reported that Manchester United is likely to miss out on Elliot Anderson, their primary midfield target, who is now favored by Manchester City, their Premier League rival and city competitor in this summer's transfer market.

Reports state that Manchester City prioritizes signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest this summer as their top target because they are looking to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new era under Enzo Maresca, the prospective manager set to replace Pep Guardiola.

Elliot Anderson, who is part of England's squad for the 2026 World Cup, has long been a main target for Manchester City, especially after captain Bernardo Silva announced his departure following nine years with the club.

Sources from Manchester City also revealed that they are not interested in signing Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea, despite his close relationship with former Chelsea manager Maresca.

Meanwhile, Manchester United also wants Elliot Anderson to reinforce their midfield in place of Casemiro, whose contract has ended. However, Nottingham Forest has set a high price of £115 million, and the player appears more inclined towards Manchester City, leading the Red Devils to possibly give up and look for other targets such as Matheus Fernandes, Aurélien Tchouaméni, or Sandro Tonali.
