Jose Mourinho, former Manchester United manager, has declared Liverpool to be greater than the Red Devils.
On 28 May 2026 GMT+7, Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese former Manchester United manager, shared his views on both clubs in recent times, admitting that Liverpool is the more successful team with a clearer direction than Manchester United, despite both being Premier League giants.
Mourinho said, “I think this is the right time to ask such a special question. Both clubs are outstanding and have a glorious history in football.”
He added, “But for me, Liverpool must be considered the best club in England, given their history and culture in the Premier League, both past and present.”
“What Liverpool has achieved in football compared to Manchester United surpasses what most people think, especially when we talk about trophies in general and trophies won over the last 10 years.”
Manchester United and Liverpool have each won the English league title 20 times, making them the two most successful teams in English league history. However, Liverpool has secured 69 major trophies in total, while Manchester United has 68. Additionally, Liverpool has won the European Cup, or UEFA Champions League, six times, whereas Manchester United has won it three times.
Jose Mourinho has managed many Premier League giants, starting with Chelsea, then moving to Inter Milan, Real Madrid, returning to Chelsea in 2013, before taking charge of the "Red Devils" Manchester United in 2016. His most recent Premier League managerial role was with Tottenham Hotspur, the last English club he managed.
