Manchester United has finalized its decision after expressing interest in Sandro Tonali, and Newcastle has responded immediately.
On 6 June 2026, CaughtOffside, a well-known football media outlet, reported that Manchester United has made a decision regarding the acquisition of Sandro Tonali, the Italian national team midfielder currently with Newcastle United, a fellow Premier League club. He is their top target for strengthening their midfield.
Previously, Manchester United withdrew from pursuing Elliott Anderson, the English midfielder, after Nottingham Forest demanded a fee of no less than £105 million. Additionally, the player appeared more interested in joining Manchester City, their city rival.
Recently, CaughtOffside noted that Manchester United has a better chance than Arsenal and Manchester City to sign Sandro Tonali, since those two clubs are focusing on other targets. The "Red Devils" are ready to offer Newcastle between £70 million and £80 million.
Manchester United believes Sandro Tonali is willing to move this summer after securing third place in the Premier League, thus qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League. In contrast, Newcastle did not qualify for any European competition.
However, sources report that Newcastle does not want to sell Sandro Tonali to a fellow Premier League rival and has confirmed they will reject any offer below £100 million, closing all negotiations in such cases.
Manchester United cannot meet Newcastle’s asking price after recently signing Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta for a total of £39 million. There are also reports they are negotiating for Portuguese midfielder Matheus Fernandes, but West Ham United demands £80 million for him.
