Liverpool star has made a decision about his future after Iraola’s first match in charge.
On 27 July 2026, Italian international forward Federico Chiesa gave an update on his future with Liverpool, the Premier League club, following new manager Andoni Iraola's debut in a preseason 4-2 win over Sunderland during their U.S. tour.
In that match, Federico Chiesa came on as a second-half substitute and scored in the 72nd minute, helping Liverpool overturn a 1-2 deficit to lead 3-2, ultimately winning 4-2. This marked Iraola’s first victory since replacing Arne Slot as manager.
Chiesa has started only one Premier League match in two seasons at Anfield under Arne Slot and scored five goals in 50 appearances across all competitions.
The 28-year-old, who transferred from Juventus in 2024 for £12.5 million and is contracted until 2028, told La Gazzetta dello Sport in June, "If I cannot perform consistently in the Premier League, I will have to consider other options."
However, after scoring in Iraola’s first game on Saturday, Chiesa revealed about his future: "Right now, I’m happy at Liverpool. I love the club, the fans, and everything here."
"I’m giving my all to seize opportunities here, and we’ll see what happens. At the moment, Liverpool is all I’m thinking about."
When asked if this represents a fresh start under new manager Iraola, Chiesa replied, "I’m not sure. It’s hard to say because every new season is a new start anyway."
"Maybe there are too many new beginnings, but I don’t pay much attention to that. I’m just trying to do my best for the new manager. Last season under Arne Slot, I also gave my best."
"Last year, I felt ready for a bigger role, but ultimately it was the coach’s decision whether to use me. Of course, I want to play more, but that’s a reality I have to accept."
"The coach made those decisions based on his plans, and I have no opinion on that. It’s part of football’s nature. This year is a new chapter with a new manager, and I have to focus on that."
