McGinn Delivers Sharp Words Ahead of Aston Villa vs. PSG in UEFA Super Cup Match
John McGinn, the midfielder and captain of the "Villans" Aston Villa, 2025-26 Europa League champions, expressed confidence and optimism about the club's goals for the 2026/27 season ahead of their UEFA Super Cup clash tonight against Paris Saint-Germain, the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League champions, in Salzburg, Austria.
Aston Villa are competing in this prestigious event for only the second time in the club’s history, having previously triumphed over Barcelona in 1983.
“I think we have always competed against the best teams in England. I believe we have competed against the best teams in Europe in every competition,” he said.
“We will face many challenges and there have been many changes in our team. But when you look at other clubs in England, they have undergone many changes as well. Many coaches have changed, many players have changed.”
“But what we still have is the core, the same manager, the same approach, and the desire to achieve even more success.”
“Many thought we had reached our peak two seasons ago, but we proved them wrong.”

Despite multiple player changes, McGinn remains steadfast in his belief that the club is heading in the right direction. He is enjoying the underdog role and the chance to prove doubters wrong again on the big stage.
“So much has changed in the eight years I’ve been here. We have the structure, standards, and rules that lead to success. I’m very excited about this new-look Aston Villa.”
