Rooney Speaks Frankly About Rashford After Returning to Manchester United, Comparing Himself in 2010

Wayne Rooney speaks candidly about Marcus Rashford after the latter's return to Manchester United, drawing a comparison to himself in 2010.

On 19 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Wayne Rooney, former England striker and Manchester United legend, openly addressed Marcus Rashford following Rashford's return to the club, linking it to Rooney's own career situation back in 2010.

Rooney said, "I was in that situation in 2010 when I requested a transfer but then decided to stay. You have to rebuild your relationship with the fans, and the easiest way to do that is by working hard, especially improving your body language. You might have a bad game, lose the ball, or make mistakes, but if the fans see you working hard and giving your all for the team, they will accept that to some extent. I think Marcus Rashford's body language, even when he comes on as a substitute, isn’t great. He might need to work with someone to improve how he presents himself."

"I believe his work rate needs to improve. If he wants to stay at the club, he just has to commit himself. He's one of the players who can break my goal-scoring record. I don’t want to see Rashford doing well only at Aston Villa or Barcelona—I want to see him succeed and score goals for Manchester United. But that means he must keep his head down, work harder, give his all, be more positive, and play with a smile on his face."
