Salah and Onana Unable to Prevent Trabzonspors Heavy Defeat, Eliminated from Europa League Playoffs

Salah and Onana were unable to help as Trabzonspor suffered a heavy defeat and were knocked out of the Europa League playoffs.

In the 2026-27 Europa League playoff second leg on Thursday night, 27 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Ferencváros from Hungary hosted Turkey's Trabzonspor, led by goalkeeper André Onana and Mohamed Salah, who recently transferred from Liverpool. In the first leg, Trabzonspor lost 0-1 at home.

Just 13 minutes into the first half, Trabzonspor faced misfortune when they were reduced to 10 men after Ruslan Malinovskyi received a direct red card for fouling an opponent.

Ferencváros, with the numerical advantage, pressed forward and took the lead 1-0 in the 19th minute through Callum O'Dowda. The first half ended with this score.

In the second half, Ferencváros extended their lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute via Marius Corbu. Then in the 57th minute, Trabzonspor were down to nine men after Sidney Lopes Cabral, the Cape Verde international left-back, received a second yellow card—resulting in a red—for a foul that conceded a penalty. Dele successfully converted the penalty, pushing Ferencváros ahead 3-0.

Late in the game, in the 86th minute, Cristian Lisztes added a fourth goal for Ferencváros, making it 4-0. The match ended with Trabzonspor losing 0-4, and a 0-5 aggregate defeat, eliminating them from the Europa League playoffs. Trabzonspor will now compete in the Conference League, while Ferencváros advance to the Europa League group stage.
