It's time. Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from the Argentina national team, reflecting on his goals, assists, and achievements to date.
On 31 Aug 2026 GMT+7, the moment has come to say goodbye. Lionel Messi, the star of Inter Miami in the US league, officially announced his retirement from the Argentina national team today, reflecting on his goals, assists, and achievements over his career.
He stated, "After the time since the final, I've thought a lot and want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the national team..."
"It is a painful decision and still hurts deeply in my heart, but I understand that the time is right. I swear I have always given everything—not just in recent years when I received everything before that too—and I have fought and dedicated everything for this jersey, to bring joy and make Argentinians proud through football."
"The curtain is closing, and this hurts me greatly. I love, love, and will always love being part of the national team. I've given my all; there is nothing left. Besides, there are many great men coming up who deserve to be there."
"Thank you for all the love over the past 20 years. I will miss hearing from you deeply. Now I will be one of them, always encouraging and supporting from the outside (in good times and bad, even more so)."
"Thanks to my family who have always stood by me through this beautiful but difficult journey. Thanks to the coaches, teammates, and all leaders I've had the chance to share with. I take with me memories and unforgettable moments that I have lived."
"I leave with peace of mind and pride in what I have given you, along with my colleagues. My dream moments—it’s crazy to have been with you. I love you!"
Thank God for making me Argentine.
Let's go, Argentina!
I wrote these words on 21 July, two days after the final. Today, after what happened with my father, I feel even more certain.
For Lionel Messi, he played 207 matches for the Argentina national team, scoring 125 goals and providing 68 assists. He led the team to 1 FIFA World Cup title, 2 Copa América titles, and 1 CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions (Finalissima) title.
