Iraola has made a decision regarding Alexis Mac Allister's admission that he nearly left Liverpool.
On 9 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Andoni Iraola, Liverpool's manager in the English Premier League, spoke about Argentina international midfielder Alexis Mac Allister ahead of tonight's UEFA Champions League 2026-27 group stage opener against La Liga's Atletico Madrid at 02:00 GMT+7.
Alexis Mac Allister recently revealed he almost left Liverpool during this summer's transfer window, admitting he was disappointed not to receive a new contract offer despite having other club options, while teammates Dominic Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch had their contracts extended.
Mac Allister was linked with a move to Manchester City amid news that Liverpool was not yet in a position to offer him a new contract, which caused him considerable disappointment.
Recently, Andoni Iraola addressed Mac Allister's contract situation, saying, "We all have different personal contract circumstances. The important thing is that he wants to be here."
"We haven't worked together long, but he is an important player and I admire him greatly. There is still plenty of time to discuss those contract matters."
"I try to help my players. I don't know their salaries; I only know how to help them improve and help the team win, including Alexis and the others."
"I am very satisfied with his performance and hope to help him develop further. He is an experienced player with many successes, but I hope he can continue to improve. If all goes well, these issues will be resolved."
Alexis Mac Allister also revealed that Andoni Iraola's arrival influenced his decision to stay at Liverpool: "Certainly, I saw something special when I returned for preseason. He is a very good coach who knows what he wants, and we are trying to reach that point."
"I haven't discussed contracts with him yet. I believe this will be a successful year, which is why I think this is the right club and the right time to stay."
