Tielemans Speaks Candidly After Manchester United Keeps Carrick Despite Sitting 16th in Premier League

Tielemans has spoken candidly after Manchester United decided not to dismiss Michael Carrick despite the team sitting 16th in the Premier League.

On 30 October 2026 GMT+7, Youri Tielemans gave a recent interview to TNT Sports after Manchester United chose not to remove Michael Carrick from his managerial position ahead of their Premier League crisis recovery attempt in week 9 of the 2026-27 season, with an upcoming away match against Chelsea on Saturday, 31 October 2026 GMT+7.

This season, Manchester United has won just 2 of 12 matches in all competitions (4 draws, 6 losses) and only 1 of 8 league games (4 draws, 3 losses), dropping them to 16th place in the Premier League standings. Initial reports suggested that the club's board was preparing to find a new manager.

However, Manchester United ultimately decided to continue giving Michael Carrick a chance to manage the team through the crisis, amid tension within the squad, including Lisandro Martinez publicly criticizing the club's management and Bruno Fernandes, the captain, questioning Carrick's tactics.

Nonetheless, Youri Tielemans believes that sacking Michael Carrick is not the right solution for Manchester United. He said, "Part of the reason I came here was because of him. He wanted me to come, to help the team. So I am very glad he will remain in charge."

"None of us want sudden changes. We don't want major shifts that would make the situation worse. What we need is stability. We have to stay committed and work hard, and eventually, things will improve."

Although he acknowledged that grievances should remain within the team, the Belgian midfielder defended his teammates' determination, saying, "Everyone is who they are; they just need to choose the right tone and timing."

"Certainly, this topic has been widely discussed, so I won't go into more detail. But it shows that everyone cares, and we all want to fix the situation."

"We want to be winners. We all have a winner's spirit. So when frustration builds up, different words or opinions may arise—that's normal. As long as it stays within the group, that is the best outcome."

Youri Tielemans concluded on the responsibility for Manchester United's performance: "It doesn't depend solely on the manager. He has done his part, and we as players must do ours. It requires cooperation from both sides."
