Sanctions for Jesus Ovono after Clash Leading to Death of Tenerife Striker Jesus de Miguel

Sanctions for "Jesus Ovono" risk a lengthy ban and criminal charges after a clash with Tenerife striker "Jesus de Miguel" who died.

On 3 Nov 2026 GMT+7, a tragic incident shook Spanish football when 30-year-old Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel died after a severe collision with Jesus Ovono, goalkeeper for FC Andorra, during a Spanish Segunda Division match, causing the referee to end the game with 2 minutes remaining.Recent reports indicate Ovono faces heavy penalties both on and off the field, with a possible suspension of up to 8 matches.

According to Mundo Deportivo, a leading Spanish media outlet, Ovono was immediately sent off with a red card after raising his knee high in a tackle that violently struck his opponent.

Under Article 130 of the sports disciplinary code, dangerous play may result in a 1-3 match ban. However, in especially severe cases, the disciplinary committee can apply Article 102, which allows suspensions from 4 to 12 matches. Ovono is thus potentially facing an 8-match suspension.

Additionally, the case may escalate to criminal charges with a prison term up to 4 years. Sport, a prominent Spanish media outlet, revealed the legal aspect, noting that the incident may not end with sports sanctions but could involve the justice system.

Under Spain’s Criminal Code Article 142, anyone causing death through gross negligence may face imprisonment from 1 to 4 years.

However, criminal liability depends on whether the act exceeded the normal risks of sports competition. Investigations will review video footage, the nature of the collision, ball position, and medical reports to decide, particularly if the deceased's family pursues legal action.

Meanwhile, Ovono is reportedly in a deeply distressed state and wishes to meet the de Miguel family personally to apologize, amid widespread mourning in Spanish football over this loss.
