Mason Greenwood, a player for Fenerbahce, became the first player in seven years to score a free kick against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League, following Lionel Messi's achievement in 2019.
On 5 Nov 2026, Mason Greenwood of Fenerbahce, a prominent Turkish league team, became the first player in seven years to score a free kick against Liverpool, helping his team to a 3-2 victory over the English club in the UEFA Champions League. The previous player to do so was Lionel Messi in 2019.
Greenwood’s goal, the former Manchester United player, came in the 29th minute when Fenerbahce earned a free kick outside the penalty area after Dominic Szoboszlai committed a foul. Greenwood took the free kick, which deflected off Liverpool opponent Jeremy Doku, altering its path and leaving Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker with no chance to save it.
This made Greenwood the first player in seven years—since 2019—to score a free kick against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League, following Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, who achieved this while playing for Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final in May 2019.
