Iraola has made a decision after Liverpool's defeat to Fenerbahçe in the UEFA Champions League.
Andoni Iraola, manager of the "Reds" Liverpool, directly criticized the team's defense for underperforming after their 2-3 away loss to Turkey's top league club Fenerbahçe, marking Liverpool's first defeat in the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League league phase.
Iraola said, "The main reason I believe we lost is because we conceded three goals from set pieces, even though this is something we have done very well in the league. I thought we had managed it quite well until today. We knew it was one of Fenerbahçe's strengths, but we conceded goals from a free kick, from a corner, and even from a long throw-in late in the game."
"Those goals hurt us because we took the lead twice after some good periods where we controlled the game, attacked, and scored. But after that, we conceded goals in situations where we should have defended better."
"It’s disappointing because this is a tough stadium to play in, and we were thinking for most of the game, 'Okay, we can win this match,' but clearly, that was not the case."
"I think we did not defend correctly. The last goal, Murigi jumped to head the ball amid three of our defenders. That is something we need to defend better. It was a really easy goal to concede."
As a result of this defeat, Liverpool remain on 9 points from 4 matches, sitting 8th in the UEFA Champions League league phase standings.
