Carrick has made his decision after Manchester United lost to Brighton and was knocked out of the Carabao Cup.
Michael Carrick, manager of the "Red Devils" Manchester United, has decided to take full responsibility following the team's 2-3 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford, resulting in elimination from the third round of the 2026-27 English Carabao Cup last night. He remains confident the team will fight back to the path of victory once again.
Carrick said, “To be honest, I think that when we started the game, around 20 or 25 minutes in, we were in a very good position, playing well and doing everything we needed. So the feeling at the start of the game and at the end is completely different.”
“The responsibility lies with me. When we win, people say I did well, but when we don’t win or get the desired result, it falls on me. I accept that. I’ve never avoided anything. That’s just how it is.”
“I told them we can’t let ourselves get into a situation like that after being in the lead but ending like this. Many things didn’t go as we hoped. We have to respond to that. We still have the game on Sunday, and that is the most important thing right now. Tonight everything happened very quickly, and over the past two or three weeks, there has been a lot of disappointment and negativity. We have to turn things around and start winning games again.”
“Right now we feel bad, but that doesn’t mean you can’t win the next football game. The players have already shown what they can do. The important thing is what happens next. That is the biggest challenge. It always has been and always will be. It’s about handling the ups and downs. We have to deal with this moment well.”
When asked if he feels pressured yet or if it’s too early to feel that way, Carrick responded, “There is no pressure at all. No matter what, it doesn’t bother me one bit. I understand what’s happening, but I’m not really worried about it.”
“What I’m concerned about is winning games, having a good atmosphere at the club, and knowing we’re moving in the right direction. If we are in a good phase, the main thing I think about is maintaining that good performance and keeping everything consistent. If we are in a bad phase, we have to get back into a good one. It’s as simple as that. We have to win football games, and I fully believe we will. Of course, we have to do it quickly, and Sunday is the starting point.”
