Iraola reveals the team Liverpool most wants to avoid
Andoni Iraola, manager of the "Reds" Liverpool, expressed satisfaction that his team won 6-5 on penalties against Chelsea after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes, advancing to the Carabao Cup 2026-27 quarterfinals. He acknowledged some luck was involved but admitted he did not want to face Bournemouth in the next round. However, since they must play them, he is determined to win.
Iraola said, "The important thing in cup football is advancing to the next round. We were fortunate to win the penalty shootout. I am very pleased because every player gave their all today, and at least we earned the reward of reaching the quarterfinals."
"To be honest, before the draw, I said, 'The only team I don't want to face is Bournemouth.' For me, it is very special. They know me well, and they have been playing very well recently. But that's how it is. We've not been very lucky with the draws. We've already faced Spurs and Chelsea, and now Bournemouth. So it is definitely special for us."
"But we must earn the right to reach the semifinals, and I hope we can do it again at home."
Additionally, Iraola expressed his pleasure with how Liverpool fans supported his team during the intense match at Anfield.
"I think the players felt the support from the people in the stands, and I believe when we come together, we can always create a better atmosphere."
"Even when we were behind, I think there was still a chant of 'Keep fighting! Keep fighting!' which helped us a lot."
"I think this feels like the third home game we've ended with a positive feeling, and we have an important match on Sunday. Let's try to finish four consecutive home wins."
