104 Years in the Making! Thai Goalkeeper Phumipapee Opens Up After Reaching Final of Japans National High School Championship

Phumipapee Siribunyakul, a Thai goalkeeper, opens up after reaching the final of Japan's National High School Soccer Tournament.

On 11 Jan 2026 GMT+7, following his outstanding performance as goalkeeper for Kashima Gakuen High School, Phumipapee Siribunyakul of the Thailand U17 national team helped his school defeat Ritsumeikan Keisho High School 1-0, making crucial saves throughout the match. The game was witnessed by over 42,000 spectators, advancing Kashima Gakuen to the final of the 104th All Japan High School Soccer Tournament, Japan's biggest high school football event.

Phumipapee is the first Thai footballer to reach the final of this prestigious tournament, prompting Thai fans and former Thailand national team coach Masatada Ishii, a Japanese, to send their support and best wishes for his success.

Phumipapee told Japanese media after reaching the final, "It's truly wonderful. Before this, I was a substitute from elementary through early middle school and never got to play. Honestly, I thought I would never have the chance. Then I came to Japan to start a new life focused on football."

"I’m not very good at studying, and a major obstacle was the language barrier. Communication was difficult, so I had to rely on translation tools to talk with my teammates."

During the match, Phumipapee's parents were watching from the sidelines. At one point, cameras caught his mother crying after witnessing her son's achievement.

Phumipapee shared, "When I saw my parents, both of them were crying. I also cried, unable to hold back my tears. We've overcome many challenges together."

"The final will be broadcast live in Thailand. I will give my all not just for myself but also for Thai football fans. I am motivated to perform for all Thai people."
