Early in the first half, in the 27th minute, Senegal took the lead 1-0 when Grepin Diatta crossed to the near post, Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra mishandled the ball, allowing Iliman Ndiaye to follow up and score without fail.
In stoppage time at 45+3 minutes, Mali was reduced to 10 men after Yves Bissouma received a second yellow card, resulting in a red card and his sending off.
Neither team scored further in the remaining time. The match ended with Senegal winning 1-0, advancing to the semifinals to await the winner between Egypt and Ivory Coast on 15 Jan.
