Prominent English Team Penalized with Point Deduction, Drops to 20th in Standings

One of England's well-known teams has been penalized with a point deduction, recently dropping to 20th place in the league standings.

On 6 Feb 2024, Leicester City, a club in England's Championship league, was penalized by the English Football League (EFL) with a 6-point deduction for breaching financial rules, effective immediately.

As a result, Leicester City fell from 17th to 20th place in the standings with 32 points, tied with 22nd-placed West Bromwich, which is in the relegation zone. However, Leicester narrowly avoided relegation due to a better goal difference.

This incident followed charges by the Premier League last May accusing Leicester of violating the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) due to cumulative losses exceeding the allowed limit over three consecutive seasons. Although the “Foxes” were relegated from the top tier to the Championship last season, the league still enforced the penalty.

Currently, Leicester City does not have a permanent manager after Marti Cifuentes was dismissed in January.

Leicester released a statement expressing their "disappointment" with the decision and described the penalty as unreasonable.

Under the Profit and Sustainability Rules, Premier League clubs must not exceed cumulative losses of £105 million over three consecutive years. For clubs outside the top tier, this threshold is reduced by £22 million.
